Literacy

ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services  The Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) serves by supporting and promoting literacy and equity of information access initiatives for traditionally underserved populations. These populations include new and non-readers, people geographically isolated, people with disabilities, rural and urban poor people, and people who may be generally discriminated against based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, language and social class.

America Goes Back to School Come On, America--Let’s Go Back to School and Help! We can prepare our students for the future by acting now on what we know: Thirty years of research show that when children can count on family and community involvement in their education, it makes a significant difference in their learning.

America Reads We are parents, teachers, college students, care givers, volunteers, business people, children... And we are united with one goal. The America Reads Challenge calls on all Americans to help ensure that every American child can read well and independently by the end of 3rd grade. You can play an important role in the America Reads Challenge.

American Association of Community Colleges (AACC)  The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) has been a national voice for two-year associate degree granting institutions since its inception in 1920.

Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America  (CSFA) is the nation's largest nonprofit private-sector scholarship and educational support organization. Through its three programs  Dollars for Scholars, ScholarShop, and Scholarship Management Services CSFA unites communities, corporations, and caring adults to help young people achieve their educational goals.

Computer Clubhouse The Computer Clubhouse provides a creative and safe after-school learning environment where young people from under-served communities work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology.

EduCare Foundation The EduCare Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation providing comprehensive interactive programs for children, teachers, school administrators and parents. Programs range from leadership and character development for students to team building, professional development and parental involvement for adults.

Learn & Serve America :: Corporation for National Service Established in 1993, the Corporation for National Service engages more than a million Americans each year in service to their communities - helping to solve community problems.

Literacy In Libraries Across America Literacy in Libraries Across America, an initiative of the American Library Association and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, is a $4 million, three-year national initiative designed to strengthen library-based adult literacy programs.

Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc.  (LVA) is a national network of over 350 locally based programs, supported by state and national staff. Our mission is to change lives through literacy. Professionally trained volunteer tutors teach Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages to courageous, motivated adults. Literacy skills enable LVA students to be better parents, workers and citizens. And their individual gains benefit their families, employers and society.

National Center for Family Literacy  The National Center for Family Literacy is a nonprofit organization supporting family literacy services for families across the United States through programming, training, research, advocacy and dissemination.

National Mentoring Partnership A mentor is an adult who, along with parents, provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already there.

Neighborhood Networks computer learning centers: closing the digital divide. Launched in 1995, Neighborhood Networks is a community-based initiative created by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Through innovative private/public partnerships, Neighborhood Networks establishes multi-service community technology centers (CTCs) that bring digital opportunity and lifelong learning to residents of public and assisted housing.

NIFL: National Institute for Literacy - Home The National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) is an independent federal organization leading the national effort toward a fully literate nation in the 21st century.
